Predictions for Eric Zorn's Blog Bowl II
Since I was the only one to pick Hynes over Obama in the primary predictions, I figure I can't do any worse this time. (Hynes did clean up in my area so I read the situation very wrongly from a Peoria bias.)
Spread between Obama and Keyes. 44%
Presidential Electoral Vote Spread. Bush over Kerry by 13.
Keyes vote percentage. 24%
Obama hasn't hit 70% in a poll yet but has been between 64 and 69% consistently. Undecideds will join the bandwagon but turnout won't be as high so I've got Obama at 68%. Keyes has been between 17% and 24% since entering. There will be plenty of Republicans that chicken out, hold their nose, and vote for Keyes anyway. Undecided/Other has been between 7% and 16%. Only one published poll claimed to include the names of all candidates on the ballot, so this is really difficult to gauge. History shows that "others" poll higher than they realize on election day since those voters aren't as motivated to go out and vote because they figure they'll get evil anyway. Still, Jerry Kohn will embarrass the un-published Tribune poll that claimed he was at 1.2%.
I'm going to say my heart gets royally broken when Jerry Kohn gets 4.95% just shy of saving the hell of another statewide petition drive in 2006, leaving Franzen with 3.05%. Those numbers could easily be reversed since almost all "protest" vote will go to an independent over a third party. I'm counting on all those radio interviews and campaign appearances to pay off though. We'll see.
Incidently, the last time two "other" candidates both got more than 1% in an Illinois Senate race was 1996, (Libertarian and Reform) but you have to go all the way back to 1920 to find when that happened before (Socialist and Farmer-Labor). The previous high for a Libertarian Senate candidate in Illinois was just two years ago when Steve Burgauer got 1.65%. (I managed his campaign also.) We should at least double that this time. If only people had integrity and allowed Jerry into the debates he would have easily gone past 5% and started to challenge Keyes for 2nd.
You know, Obama has 2 or 3 percent to spare, so he should take one for the team and instruct a small portion to vote for Kohn so we are automatically on the ballot in 2006. Might make things much different for Blago's re-election bid if we are sure to have a Libertarian on the ballot for Governor and the Republican is someone like Topinka who burns their conservative wing. Nah, their egos wouldn't allow it.
Kerry takes Illinois by 13%. 56% to 43% and Michael Badnarik does better than any previous Libertarian Presidential candidate in Illinois with more than 1%.
PS. Why a 13 electoral vote difference? I think Bush may have an elector defector. In 1972 a Nixon elector defected and voted for the Libertarian ticket of John Hospers and Tonie Nathan. Tonie Nathan was the first woman and first Jew is US History to receive an electoral college vote.

Attention Kerry Voters Think about this seriously for a moment. What proposals has Kerry offered in this election to eliminate taxing the poor? Isn't it common sense that the LEAST government can do for poor people is to stop taking their money? Is it really fair that $6/hour single moms still have to pay their "fair share" of social security when social security benefits are given to those who don't need it, such as George Ryan and his $200,000/year tax free government pension? What proposals has Kerry made to stop taxing the poor and stop giving poor people's money to pension millionaires? Seriously, why does anyone making $25,000/year or less have to pay a single penny in taxes? Posted at: 12:40 pm | permalink
Attention Bush Voters Think about this seriously for a moment. What spending cuts has Bush proposed during this election? How has Bush proposed to make government any smaller? Go do your research and get back to me because I haven't found a single mention of specific spending cuts or any smaller government proposals. Posted at: 12:37 pm | permalink
Franzen on education
I hadn't heard this before.
Albert Franzen wants to totally fund all education through the federal government taking all control not only away from local school boards and proerty tax districts, but away from state governments also.
Maybe it's not such a bad idea. Government schools will totally collapse that much quicker with Washington DC in charge, giving parents more control of selecting the right school, instead of the school the government tells them is their only choice because it is closest.

RINOs in the 53rd are nervous
One race that's gone under the media's radar this year is the 53rd State Rep. district where Libertarian Scott Bludorn has a major upset of Sid Mathias brewing. If won't be under the radar for long and you only have to look at the smear campaign Mathias and his RINO crowd have desperately resorted to now that they have already been embarrassed by Scott's unbelievable campaign.
Driving through the district you'll see Scott's yard signs (in yards not public property) outnumbering the incumbent Republican by a good 50 to 1, no exaggeration. House after house on the main roads with Bush/Cheney and Bludorn signs has to be making them more than a bit nervous that their taken for granted Republican base has been properly attacked. Mathias got so desperate this week that he called on his Buffalo Grove Village Trustees to write and co-sign a smear letter in the Daily Herald that basically equates the Libertarian Party, and thus Scott, with a certain party from Germany in the 1930s.
The whisper campaign Mathias is using is that if Scott wins we'll lose all our police officers and firefighters and everyone will just be running through the streets naked. I don't remember reading about that happening in Germany so they really need to make up their minds on which lie they want to keep telling. The unbelievable part of the letter was blaming legalized gambling on Scott, even though their guy Mathias gets campaign donations from the gambling lobby and it was the Republicans that lied to us about using lottery money to fix school funding, then off track betting money to fix school funding, then river boat casinos to fix school funding while $40 million subsidies are given to the horse racing for allowing river boat gambling, and now land based casinos to fix school funding. I don't remember a Libertarian being in the GA while the Republicans were passing all that and income tax increase and lying the whole time.
It's all good though. Scott has a 16,000 piece targetted mailing hitting them this weekend. He's already personally knocked on 15,000 doors and more than 100 volunteers have come out to help him cover the entire district. Twice. 60 volunteers will be there this weekend going door to door finishing off the lazy, arrogant Mathias who doesn't have a website and couldn't comprehend the concept of email if it was a $50,000 check from a gambling lobbyist. The yard signs are already enough of an embarrassment to Mathias and Cross' House Campaign Committee, but the vote totals should just about turn them red for at least the next two years. Schmucks. We also hear Mathias is none too happy about his campaign material "mysteriously" vanishing from the precinct organization's Republican packets for their other candidates and word is more than a few sample ballots were handed out that had Sid's name crossed off and Bludorn's circled instead.
Ahhhh. I'll be there all weekend and again on Tuesday. This is probably it for blogging until after the election. Monday I'm squeezing in lunch with the new President of Caterpillar.

Debate protest was fun
We had a good 30-35 Kohn supporters out facing off with the Obama and Keyes people who didn't outnumber us by much at all. Those Obama sycophants are a piece of work, though. Between their chants of "Yes we can", we added the word "discriminate" to their dismay. That's all it took for them to get started on their road to tin-foil hatville.
According to the Obama people we were just out to get the white supremacist vote, which we'd rather would stay home than vote for us. Considering Jerry Kohn announced in October 2003, long before anyone knew the primary winners let alone Keyes' late entry, and you can tell what type intellectual level the Obama supporters are at.
The same tired claim they keep making that Jerry Kohn must have changed his name to get confused John Kerry voters made the Obama crew's tin-foil hats even tighter. Again, Jerry announced he was running before anyone had an inkling John Kerry would be the Dem. nominee. And since Jerry Kohn has had his name his entire life and ran for state rep. two years ago and library trustee last year, I'd say if our motive was to get confused John Kerry voters, then EVERYONE should be voting for our obviously clairvoyant party. Funny how the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times didn't mention the similar names when they endorsed Jerry Kohn over Democrat Bob "I barely got out of the rap for beating my girlfriend" Rita for state rep. two years ago. The Democrats really showed their intelligence putting Rita in office where they'll vote for him again this year too.
The Keyes supporters were a lot more cordial than the hate-filled Obama gang. We countered their "Keyes For Life" chant with "Keyes Is For The Draft". One his supporters, a very pretty young woman actually, said we should stop saying that because it wasn't true and we discussed it respectfully. We based it on Keyes wanting mandatory one year in basic training and another year for National Service. If that isn't the draft, I don't know what is. Then during the debate Keyes proved us absolutely right on that one. Many of us actually chatted quite a bit with the Keyes crew. It probably helped that I yelled "when Topinka is your nominee in two years you'll be glad we're around". The Obama gang were too stuck up to say anything to us but ignorance based insults.
Even though none of the media reported on our protest, we deemed it a success. One of the nervous police officers stuck in the middle of us to keep us peaceful apparently learned a valuable lesson about which supporters had the most integrity. As he left he turned around to Jerry and said, "You've got my vote Jerry". Keyes crew was pretty annoying and the Obama gang was just downright nasty and rude. We were suppose to be the ones the police had to watch out for since we had every reason to be angry, but we were just having a lot of fun at their expense being our normal respectful and peaceful selves. It was obvious to that police officer.
After the debate Alan Keyes did come over and shake Jerry's hand and chatted for a moment with us. That was classy. Obama stuck to his elitist attitude which has obviously rubbed off on his supporters.

WGN has me re-thinking Cubs loyalty
Two Satudays ago, Jerry Kohn attended a candidate forum with Alan Keyes on Chicago's north side. Actually, when Jerry called the event organizer and asked to be included they were rude and accusatory in telling him he wasn't invited. Jerry went anyway and handed out his brochures and mingled before the "debate" was to begin with only Alan Keyes since Obama sure wasn't going to attend.
While the organizer was introducing Keyes a guy in the small crowd, who wasn't Jerry's plant, asked why Jerry couldn't participate. They were stuck on the spot then and asked Keyes if Jerry could join him. So up Jerry went to sit next to Keyes and the debate was on. WGN among some other media were there covering the story. The Sun-Times had an article on the event that didn't mention Jerry's participation but WGN took the cake.
They ran their news story on the event and showed video of Keyes and Kohn sitting side by side. They didn't even mention Jerry Kohn in that report even though he was sitting right next to another candidate with no hope of winning. They went out of their way to avoid even mentioning that Jerry participated in the debate. Someone wanted to know Jerry hasn't been more visible, but they're asking the wrong guy. Try giving WGN or the Tribune a call and asking them what their problem is.
Couple that with the Chicago Tribune devoting an entire article on a Senate write-in candidate but not showing Jerry the same respect and I'm seriously re-thinking my loyalty to the Cubs. Especially now that Steve Stone is gone. If Sammy Sosa returns in a Cubs uniform next year that will seal it for me. Then again, Sosa's arrogance and lame selfishness pretty much fits perfectly with what their entire company has become. Sosa's lack of integrity fits the Tribune company to a tee these days.

Keyes takes "slaveholders" position on forced national service
I just had to with the title.
From his own website in 2000. Keyes doesn't come straight out and say he wants all of our youth to be forced to serve for two years, but, as is typical, he gets to that conclusion after much verbal self-manipulation. So slavery is alright with Keyes if it is the government doing it and only for two years. And what would Jesus think about mandatory, forced servitude to the government?
Question: ...What would you think of mandatory service for our youth. When they come out of high school or college, they use their abilities go out into this country and see how the other people live. And wouldn't that bring us all together, as a nation?
Keyes: I agree with you. I think it would. And I have championed for a long time the view that instead of moving, as we did back during the Nixon era, into a voluntary kind of military service. I thought that was the wrong way around. I think that national service is an obligation of citizenship in a republic.
...
And I think that it would consist of having everybody, after they have finished high school, know that they were going to face two years--and regardless, by the way, of their status in other ways. Wealth wouldn't stand in the way. Nothing would stand in the way. And you would have to serve those two years. You would go through a first period of basic training, in which everybody would get the basic training that is given to people who are going into military life, and then I would offer people a range of options, including service in the various branches of the military, which would then be available to them to fulfill their two years of national service.
...
I strongly support that ideal, and I think that it ought to be established in this country.

DO IT FOR THE CHILDREN
Have you heard this argument before to justify ill-conceived government intrusions? How about, "what message will this send to our children"? Well, now it is our opportunity to turn the table on these types of arguments.
Illinois has a Mock Election program in many of our schools that lets kids pretend to participate in our so-called democracy. Luckily, by law, they can't leave our candidates off their mock ballots. It's estimated that more than 1 million Illinois children will participate in the Mock Election program. As many of you know, Jerry Kohn is a high school teacher and his school recently voted in their mock election. Jerry Kohn won with 44.2% of the vote at his high school, followed by Barack Obama at 33.3%, Alan Keyes at 15.9%, and Albert Franzen at 6.5%.
What message does it send to our kids when they see Libertarian candidates on their mock ballots, but see the media and the debate sponsors ignore those candidates?
I'll tell you what message it sends. They are teaching more than a million Illinois children that discrimination is not only acceptable, but is the right thing to do. They are teaching more than a million Illinois children that it is acceptable to discriminate against a relatively small percentage of the population just because they can. They are teaching more than a million Illinois children that 2% or 5% or 9% of our population doesn't matter.
The Chicago Tribune recently dedicated an entire article on a write-in candidate for U.S. Senate, but they have not done the same for Jerry Kohn, a candidate and his supporters that spent tens of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours just to get on the ballot. What message does that send not only to our children, but to everyone else in Illinois?

And no, Libertarian Jerry Kohn is NOT invited. But Jerry will be there and he NEEDS you to join him.
WTTW is a publicly funded TV station, which means they are using our money to discriminate against a candidate we support. It’s bad enough that they are discriminating against Jerry Kohn even without them using our money to do so.

DO IT FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD
American soldiers are facing death on a daily basis in Iraq and Afghanistan while we try to install democratic governments in their countries. Afghanistan's recent Presidential election included 18 candidates on their ballots. In Iraq, American "leaders" are installing a proportional representative election system that will give political minorities, much like our own Libertarian Party, a voice a vote and a seat in their government. 500 petition signatures, with 25% from women, is the requirement for ALL candidates to run for their National Assembly, much unlike Illinois. As is typical of American history, our foreign policy is more of the "do as we say, not as we do" variety.
But the examples we set in America to the rest of the world concerning free and equal elections rears its ugly head eventually. Just last week in Russia, Vladimir Putin announced new ballot access requirements that will make it harder for "minor" parties to get on their ballots. If America can get away with it, why can't they? They can and they are.
Will the same bad American example be followed in Iraq and Afghanistan less than two decades from now as the former Soviet Union has now done? Will two "major" parties in Iraq emerge and all but shut out "minor" parties, like Barack Obama thinks is acceptable right here in Illinois? They don't know "liberal" and "conservative" in Iraq, so it is fully expected that the two biggest political parties will be divided between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims. "Minor" political parties will try to represent the Kurds and Christians in that country. Kurds number about 4 million and Christians about 500,000 of the 25 million person population in Iraq.
The message this debate on Tuesday and our election law in Illinois is sending to Iraq is that it is acceptable for the Sunni and Shi'ite majority to discriminate against the Kurds and Christians. Barack Obama and Alan Keyes, both professed Christians, are telling the Christians of Iraq that they don't matter when it comes to having a role in their government policies. WTTW-PBS Chicago and all the other debate sponsors are telling the Kurds they are insignificant and don't have enough support to even be heard on the same stage with the political majorities.
Just like Russia, the power that tends to corrupt will absolutely corrupt eventually. Following the example of Republicans, Democrats, Alan Keyes, Barack Obama, John Kerry, George Bush, WTTW, WLS-ABC Chicago, the Illinois Radio Network, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, the Daily Herald, the League of Women Voters, the Chicago Urban League, the Asian American Institute, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the City Club of Chicago, and the Mikva Challenge Grant Foundation, right here in Illinois, they are telling the minority Kurds and Christians in Iraq that they don't matter. What message does their discriminatory behavior show the rest of the world? Is this the type of foreign policy we want to participate in? Is this the moral example we want to set for Iraq?

Sham Debate
First, they won't even mention that there are other candidates on the ballot, I bet.
Obama - Opening Statement
Moral crusade slam against Keyes interesting. Just a bunch of fluff.
Keyes - Opening Statement
Conjures Lincoln-Douglas. Abortion. Gay marriage. and bad and at stake in this election. Abortion, abortion, abortion. He's really talking down to blacks that vote for Obama.
Iraq
Keyes - Agrees with Bush on attacking Iraq. Says Bush wants to eliminate probability of terrorism to 0%. Impossible, I must say.
Obama - there were no WMDs. No connection between Osama and Saddam. Caught on the 0 probability from Keyes. good job there. Talks about unsecure nuclear materials and plants around the world.
Kohn - Bring troops home now. Don't make the same mistakes we've made in the past which has created the problem in the first place. This root cause has not been discussed. We gave Osama missiles. We gave Saddam WMDs. We created the mess we are now trying to clean up and it has cost us too many lives already.

Russia follows US lead.
Will Iraq and Afghanistan be far behind? If so, human beings WILL die.
Eric Garris, a really nice guy, over at AntiWar Blog has a chilling post about new election laws in Russia that will limit ballot access for "minor" political parties. As it stands now, Afghanistan and Iraq have the exact same requirements for ALL candidates that want to run for public office, very much unlike Barack Obama's endorsed anti-democractic Illinois election laws.
I've said this before and will say it again. If we instituted election laws in Iraq and Afghanistan identical to what we have in Illinois, there would be civil war with considerable lives lost. I know some of you, (Bill), are sick of hearing about discriminatory election laws, but they are extremely crucial, especially in countries new to democracy.
Imagine the Sunni Muslims in Iraq following Barack Obama's lead by making it 10,000 times harder for Shiites or Kurds or Christians or Jews in Iraq to run for public office. Just imagine the example Barack Obama sends to the rest of the world when he endorses the same type of discrimination right here in Illinois. There are about 400,000 Christians in Iraq. Did you know that? According to Barack Obama's stance on democracy, or lack thereof, Barack Obama believes a Sunni dominated political party in Iraq, which we all know will happen, should be able to make it 10,000 times harder for a Christian dominated political party in Iraq to run candidates for office.

OOPS
So now we have confirmation that the League of Women Voters in Illinois is not only unfair, but they are incompetent as well.
On Saturday they posted this on the front page of their website. (Bold is mine.)
Illinois U.S. Senate candidates will hold a televised debate this Thursday, October 21st at 7:00 p.m. The debate will be held at the WLS-TV Channel 7 studio in Chicago and is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Illinois, Channel 7, the Chicago Urban League, the Asian American Institute, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and the Mikva Challenge Grant Foundation.
Candidates partipating in the debate are Alan Keyes, Republican; Jerry Kohn, Libertarian and Barack Obama, Democrat. Albert Franzen, Independent candidate, is not eligible to participate because he did not meet the minimum of 10% voter support in statewide non-partisan polls.
The candidates will be questioned by a panel of Chicago journalists as well as having the opportunity to question each other.
So, that means they invited Jerry Kohn to their debate, right? Especially considering the article in the Chicago Sun-Times
In conjunction with the League of Women Voters, Channel 7 will air a debate among Obama, Keyes and senatorial candidates Albert Franzen and Jerry Kohn at 7 p.m. Thursday. Channel 7 news anchor Ron Magers will moderate the event, featuring a panel of journalists including Channel 7's Andy Shaw, Sun-Times columnist Laura Washington and Carlos Hernandez-Gomez of WBEZ-FM (91.5).
Again, Jerry must be in the debates, right? Wrong. It was "just" an error. An error I've had to explain to a good 30 callers this morning and even more emails wishing Jerry luck in the debate.
I see John Kerry is demanding equal time from Sinclair because of them running the piece on Kerry's military record. Where are all the Democrats demanding equal time and fairness for the rest of us, or does that only apply to you? Evidently, it's not fair to John Kerry to run a piece negative to his campaign, but John Kerry and Barack Obama think it is perfectly fair what they do to "other" candidates.
I won't point you to their website, but I also want to mention something else about the League of Women Voters in Illinois. They put out an "Election 2004 Issues Guide", and link to it on their front page. They list the Presidential candidates as Bush, Kerry, independent Ralph Nader, and the Green Party's David Cobb. Well, Nader and Cobb AREN'T on the Illinois ballot, or even on the ballot in as many states as Libertarian Michael Badnarik (48), but the League of Women Voters in Illinois DO NOT list Michael Badnarik in their guide. Can you say damages? Can you say illegal in-kind campaign contributions? They're very lucky we don't like playing their legal games. A wise man pointed out to me that the average age of the members of the LWV is getting higher and higher. That may explain something.

Lincoln's Ghost
From Eric Zorn on October 12th, post titled "WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH ALAN KEYES?", the last paragraph regarding the US Senate debate.
And I suspect that if Abe Lincoln's ghost haunts the Old State Capitol where he made such a mark so long ago, it smiled tonight at the sight of two black men debating as the leading candidates for Senate in his beloved state of Illinois.
Wrong Eric, Lincoln's ghost would be saying 'where were the other candidates?'. Lincoln was a third party candidate and if Abraham Lincoln had faced the same political discrimination that are piled on third parties now by the two parties in power, and especially the media, we would be saying 'Abraham who?'. Abraham Lincoln would not have been on the ballot if he faced similar requirements that now oppress third parties, and if the League of Women Voters were around at the time sponsoring the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates, they never would have happened. (Side note here that Lincoln shunned the idea of women voting.)
Here is part of Lincoln's original Republican Party Platform.
1. Resolved, That we believe this truth to be self-evident, that when parties become subversive of the ends for which they are established, or incapable of restoring the government to the true principles of the Constitution, it is the right and duty of the people to dissolve the political bands by which they may have been connected therewith, and to organize new parties upon such principles and with such views as the circumstances and the exigencies of the nation may demand.
Sure, Lincoln may indeed have smiled at the sight of two black males running for US Senate in Illinois. But Lincoln would have been absolutely disgusted with the actions of his current Republican Party, the current Democratic Party, Barack Obama, the League of Women Voters, and most all of the media in Illinois.
If Lincoln were around today would he be a Libertarian? Probably not. I would venture to assume that Lincoln would not be voting for Barack Obama simply because Obama does not believe in "the true principles of the Constitution" as Obama's actions prove he rejects true democracy and free and equal elections. And make no mistake about it, Barack Obama is the reason why Libertarian Jerry Kohn and independent Albert Franzen will not be in the debates. Lincoln would believe that Barack Obama and his Democratic Party have indeed "become subversive of the ends for which they are established", and Lincoln would have no option but to think the same of his Republican Party after their actions also prove their disdain for free and equal elections.
So Mr. Zorn, would Abraham Lincoln's Ghost be smiling watching the US Senate debate in the Old Capitol? No. On the whole, Lincoln would be utterly disgusted by the actions of Barack Obama, the current Republican Party, and most of the media. I suspect largely because of the corrupt nature of both major parties in Illinois and their enormous lust for power evidenced by our state election laws, that like switching from Whig to Republican, Abraham Lincoln would again venture on to a new party that had not "become subversive of the ends for which they are established". But knowing the media in Illinois and organizations like the League of Women Voters, Abraham Lincoln in today's age would be totally ignored.
I believe that Abraham Lincoln would think as I do about this US Senate race. A candidate that does NOT believe in the principles of democracy is NOT qualified to be a US Senator. A vote for Barack Obama is vote for political discrimination. A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for continued corruption like Chicago's "Hired Truck Scandal" that took place under his nose in his own district. A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for subverting the principles of our Constitution to solely benefit Barack Obama's lust for power over the obligation of free and equal elections. A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for the behavior of Michael Madigan in removing candidates from the ballot. A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for the anti-democartic coronation method used by Lipinski to crown his son. A vote for Barack Obama is a vote against democracy, against equality, against fairness, against our Constitution, and against the America our founders envisioned. These are the thoughts that Lincoln's ghost more likely would conjure watching the unequal, unfair, un-American, and discriminatory debate in our Old Capitol last week. As for Alan Keyes on this matter, his mouth is much bigger than his actions can back up.
There would be no Abraham Lincoln if the leaders of his day shared Barack Obama's views in favor of political discrimination, silencing legitimate and essential political voices, unfair ballot access laws, unequal elections, and special rights and privileges for the powerful, connected few.
